Marathon County Crime Stoppers would like to take this opportunity to warn the community of scams, both on
the internet and by telephone.
Between 1/01/2024 and 07/01/2024 the Marathon County Sheriff’s Office responded to and generated reports
on 24 scams in which citizens and businesses lost a total of over $477,000.00. This is an average loss per scam
victim in Marathon County of $19,882.00. These numbers do not include the City of Wausau Police
Department, Mountain Bay Metro Police Department, Kronenwetter Police Department, Mosinee Police
Department or any other local law enforcement agencies numbers, these are strictly from the Marathon County
Sheriff's Office.
The most common ways scammers interact with victims is through the computer or telephone. Emails, phone
calls, text messages, Facebook or other applications messaging platforms, pop-up windows on your computer
(purporting to be from Microsoft or other trusted companies)
Generally, there are clues that you are being scammed, but scammers use your emotions to cloud your judgment
by either being overly nice or using high pressure and deadlines that you feel compelled to act.
Lottery/Publisher’s Clearing House Scams – Did you buy a lottery ticket or in some other way join the lottery
or publisher’s clearing house? If you didn’t why would you have won anything? Are they asking you to pay
them first before claiming a prize? Are they asking you to send them gift cards or prepaid debit cards like
Green Dot or crypto currency like Bitcoin? Then it is a scam.
Are they sending you a check that you need to cash and then send them money back to cover fees? It’s a scam.
Is the item on marketplace priced too good to be true and they need you to pay before you pick it up in person?
Scam. Are you getting messages or calls about late toll fees or a warrant for your arrest? Call the Marathon
County Sheriff’s Office or your local Law Enforcement and we can determine if there is a warrant or not.
Don’t be fooled. Generally, if you have a warrant, you know about it and you know why you’d have one.
Any company asking for gift cards, crypto currency, prepaid cards or cash through the mail should draw your
scrutiny. Don’t call the phone numbers they give you, do your own research and call known verified phone
numbers for those businesses/entities and don’t become a victim of a scam.
