Marathon County Crime Stoppers would like the community to be aware of a couple of scams that have resurfaced in the area this month.
In one instance, a citizen received a phone call from a man identifying himself as an IRS agent. The man told the person she was behind on her taxes and demanded money. He said if she didn’t go get a Green Dot MoneyPak the IRS would charge her with tax evasion. The next day the man called again and threatened the female telling her he would seize her belongings for restitution if she didn’t send the money. This is not how the IRS would conduct business for a tax collection. Do not use the MoneyPak to pay taxes, or fees to claim “winnings” on a foreign lottery or prize promotion.
In the second scam, a male caller told the victim he was her Grandson and provided her Grandson’s name. The male said he was in trouble in Madison and was in jail and needed $2000 to get out of jail. A second male came on the phone identifying himself as an Officer and gave her instructions on how to get a Green Dot MoneyPak. You should call a family member to verify there is a legitimate need for funds before you send money in this circumstance.
