In July of 2011 the Marathon County Sheriff’s Department took a report of the theft of a large amount of collector coins valued at over $100,000. The coins were hidden in a residence and may have been taken sometime between July 2010 and July 2011.
There were approximately 80 coins stolen that included various denominations of gold Indian coins, $20 gold Liberty coins, $25 gold American Eagle coins, $1 silver American Eagle coins, and others. Most of the coins were minted in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s although there are some that are as new as 2009. These coins are made of real gold and silver and are worth much more than their denominations.
The coins were professionally graded and individually encased in plastic protective cases. Written on each case is information about the coin it contains including the condition and grade. The coins cannot be removed from the cases without damaging the cases. Removal would reduce their value since the case indicates proof of their authenticity, condition, and grade.
Below are stock photos of similar coins.

GRANDPARENT’S BEWARE
Law enforcement agencies throughout the United States respond to dozens of complaints every year of grandparents being scammed out of thousands of dollars using a popular phone scam.
The professional scam artists prey on the vulnerability of grandparents by posing over the phone using the actual name of a grandchild. The scam artists state they are in Canada or another foreign country, have been arrested and need bail money or have been in an accident and need money for repairs or to cover medical expenses. The grandparents are convinced to wire money (typically Western Union) to destinations outside the United States.
Investigations reveal that a large number of the “granny frauds” are coming from people looking at the various social networks such as Facebook, Twitter, and My Space. The grandchildren are putting enough information on their postings that the perpetrators are able to search the internet for the phone numbers of their grandparents.
If the suspects are identified, they can be prosecuted by either state or federal court. Typically victims of this type of scam rarely recover any of their monetary loss. Citizens who are victims of a scam can go to marathoncountycrimestoppers.org and click on the external link to the Internet Crime Complaint Center for more information.
